I really thought that there would be much more to say on this topic, but there really isn’t. I’m sure you’ve seen the headlines that Ron Paul has received more donations from the military than any other candidate. It’s odd that such a fringe candidate would get so much support. If you felt suspicion than that is good because you have every right. What annoys me the most is that the media really let us down by not reporting how such information is calculated.
Here’s the fact: When you donate to a candidate, there will be a box that says “Employer” and you can put in whatever you want. The whole system of calculating this support is based on nothing more than the honor system. The only way you could trust the number is if you believe that no one would manipulate and lie for the benefit of a candidate. Ron Paul supporters haven’t been the best at playing the ethics card, such as spamming online polls.
And yes, this is a big let down from the media. If you reported that this was all just an honor system thing and people could type whatever they felt like in the employer box, we wouldn’t have taken it seriously.
Don’t believe me? Well, let’s look at the 2008 year end for Ron Paul. What kind of employers donated to Dr. Ron Paul?
I rest my case.
